Joyce Elaine Chatham was born in Elkin, NC, and spent her early childhood in Rocky Mount and Roaring River. Yet she easily became a Georgia Gal after moving here in her teens, and Stone Mountain eventually became her home.

She loved school and graduated from Avondale HS. Afterward, she began attending nursing school at Georgia Baptist, then finished and graduated in Norfolk, Va.
She married Dean Carroll, a Navy officer and jet pilot. From this union came her two children, daughter Deana and son Chris.

She loved her chosen career as a nurse, specializing in trauma care. Even after her retirement she continued to perform volunteer work with the H2U program of the HCA Hospital system.

She loved Jesus, small children, cute little animals, and especially loved cats.

She was a devout UGA and NASCAR fan, enjoyed country music, wholesome entertainment and always enjoyed a good laugh…which she was eager to share with anyone.

Joy was a fine example of true Southern hospitality; always welcoming with a gleaming smile and an aura of good ol’ country craft.

She enjoyed cooking and was a great cook at that. Not just the task, but also collecting and exchanging recepies with others she enjoyed just as much.

She loved people, making friends out of associates, coworkers and just about anyone she would meet. They would often remark what a delight it is to be in her presence and how she indeed lived up to her name: Joy.

Most of all, she was a finest example of a wonderful mother. One of the toughest and most challenging jobs she ever took on. Yet to her, it was her highest honor. She did it all with exceptional loving devotion, endurance and grace. We thank you, Mom!

Until we meet again with Jesus: we all love you, we all enjoyed the times with you and we will all certainly miss you here!
