Resided in: Stone Mountain, Georgia

Maxine Brookhart of Stone Mountain, GA passed peacefully at her home at the age of 99 on January 29, 2023 surrounded by family.

Maxine was born April 29, 1923 and grew up in Wapakoneta, OH.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Jack, son Dennis Brookhart, grandson Dorian Brookhart, sisters Emma Hodder, Lana Fate, Helen Bradley, Marty Horvath and brother Don Shipley.

She is survived by her loving family; brother Carl Shipley (Jane), sister Joan Gustafson (Carl), sons Bruce Brookhart (Mary), Michael Brookhart (Kim), daughters Lynn Canada (Tim), Lisa Navarre (Johnny), daughter-in-law Beverly Brookhart, grandsons Jeremy Brookhart, Michael Brookhart (Jennifer), Christopher Brookhart (Morgan) and great grandchildren Sadie, Xander and Finley.

Maxine had many interests over her lifetime.  She was an avid reader, passionate gardener, loved playing games, was an excellent bridge player and had a collection of Cardinal memorabilia that gave her joy.   She found great delight in spending time with her family and friends, and entertaining.

Over the span of her life, she had several occupations ranging from working on the family farm, guiding horse trail rides, driving an 18-wheeler to farmers markets and even to the carnival circuit to set up for pony rides.  As with any large family, she helped to raise her younger brothers and sisters.  Maxine was one of the great women who stepped up during World War II to build communication telephones for submarines.  She was a soda jerk and a manager in an ice cream shop, a switchboard operator and lived the majority of her life raising her five children.

Due to her husband’s work, Maxine was afforded the opportunity to live in Hawaii, California, Georgia and Florida and finally settling back in Georgia.  She lived here in Stone Mountain for the past 40 years.

She received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the President of the United States for volunteer community service for more than 4000 hours contributed in Gwinnett County for starting and running a senior citizen bridge club for close to 40 years.

Maxine was always a straight shooter and you knew where you stood with her. She was a lady with a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed making people smile.  She will be missed by everyone whose life she touched.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of her favorite charities: Wounded Warriors, Boys Town, St. Jude Hospital for Children, Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary
