Mei Ling Morales Shackelton, 78, of Suwanee, Georgia, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2022 after the discovery of untreatable cancer.
Mei Ling was born on December 14, 1943, in Davao City, Philippines to Federico Uyaco Morales and Emilia Manas Morales. After graduating from Basilian City High School in 1961, she was selected to be an American Field Service “AFS” scholar and stayed with the family of Philip Qualls in Fort Madison, Iowa, where she attended Fort Madison High School. She later obtained her Bachelor of Education degree at Zamboanga State College in the Philippines.
Following her graduation, she began her teaching career at Isabela Central Elementary Pilot School. She taught for many years including a position as an ESL teacher in California.
In 1968, Mei Ling met Charles Shackelton, a Peace Corps volunteer, and they wed in 1970. They had the opportunity to live all over the world, including South Korea where they had their first child, Don. They also had twin girls, Aimee and Emily, born in California. The family had the fortune of living in Hong Kong and Mexico City. The family also hosted an exchange student, Elena Herrero Visairas from Spain. Mei Ling truly enjoyed being a wife and homemaker.
In addition to travel, Mei Ling enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a friend to everyone she met, and was involved with many groups in her Church and the Emmaus Community.
Mei Ling was predeceased by her parents Federico and Emilia Morales, and brothers, Don and Dennis.
Mei Ling is survived by her spouse, Charles Shackelton, her children, Don Charles Shackelton (Tana), Aimee Nobs (Derek), and Emily Coe (Jeff), 6 grandchildren, Devin, Charlie, Wesley, Sydney, Audrey and Alexis, and by her sisters, Mimi Morales Pajarito and Leslie Morales Mendoza (Nathaniel), and her AFS sisters, Darla Dennison and Liane Maag.
Please join us in celebrating Mei Ling’s life on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at 2 p.m. at McKendree United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lawrenceville Co-Op or Global Hope Partners (India).
