Resided in: Lawrenceville, Georgia

Philip Wayne Cobb, 74, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 18, 2023. Born April 1, 1949, in Thomasville, GA, Phil was the eldest of three children to William Thomas Cobb IV & Rebecca Lundy Cobb. Phil grew up in Camilla, Georgia, graduating from Mitchell County High School in 1967. He graduated from Georgia Southern College and was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity. Phil met the love of his life, Carol Morgan while attending Georgia Southern. They married in 1971 and had over 52 wonderful years together. Due to Phil’s military assignments, they lived in several places during the first years of their marriage, finally moving to the Atlanta area in 1973. After seven years of marriage, they were blessed with a son. Phil and Carol loved to travel. They enjoyed road trips throughout the United States, as well as many trips overseas.

Phil was a member of the American Arbitration Association, Associated Building Contractors, Associated General Contractors, and served on the advisory board at Georgia Southern University for 16 years, chairing the board for 7 of those years. His professional career was in building construction and development. During his career he had his own firm, as well as working for other large firms in senior executive positions. His reputation for insisting work be done properly, regardless of consequence, preceded him. Retiring in 2003, his phone kept ringing with offers for further career enhancement. Eventually he elected to consult for a few select clients developing more projects over the next 20 years.

Phil was an avid reader and sportsman. During his younger years, Phil competed with showing horses winning and placing quite regularly. He also played football through his high school years, lettering 3 years. As an adult, Phil enjoyed playing tennis and racquetball regularly. Phil was also an avid fisherman and hunter of big game as well as upland birds and waterfowl. The love of upland bird and waterfowl hunting generated another love of training and working with his Labrador Retrievers, English Pointers and German Shorthairs. He and his dogs, along with his son and close friends, would accompany him across the United States for various types of hunting. Phil also had a love of flyfishing that, on occasion, would also include his wife by his side enjoying the peace and serenity of the beautiful streams. Later on in life, Phil enjoyed golf extensively with friends and family, playing multiple times a week, including playing one last round on the day he passed away. Phil also had a high interest in camellia bushes and had over 25 full grown camellia bushes in his yard where when those bushes were in bloom it was a sight to behold. However, his most precious times were those times spent with his Grandson. Regardless of whether it was fishing, road tripping, watching his grandson play his favorite sport of soccer, or providing life lessons through conversation, his grandson was front and center.

Phil was raised in the Methodist Church and was an active member of Grayson United Methodist Church. Prior to being at Grayson, Phil was a member at Berkmar United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees including terms as Chairman and was Chairman of the Building Committee twice. Throughout all the churches Phil was a part of, he was always active in men’s groups such as weekly bible study, serving as an Usher, and leading several Sunday School Classes.

Phil had an unfailing love for his family and always found a way to take care of them, even in extremely challenging times. Phil was a loving husband, an incredible dad, and a proud Papa to his grandson. He was a loyal friend to many and a faithful servant to his Lord.

Survivors include his wife Carol of Lawrenceville; his son Philip Morgan Cobb (Ashley); grandson Preston Morgan Cobb of Canton, GA. Brothers, William L. Cobb of Lake City, Florida and Thomas L. Cobb (Crystal) of Azle, Texas, Maternal Aunt Ellie Wren of Garner, North Carolina, cousins and in-laws.
