Robert L. Maughon – adventurer, avid amateur photographer, banker, husband, father, provider and loving soul was born in Kannapolis, N.C., February 14, 1928 to his parents F.O. & Iona Maughon. On the evening of Friday, February 6, 2015 with his family at his side, Mr. Robert L. Maughon, 86, of Stone Mountain, Georgia passed away as his loving heart finally gave way, releasing him for his heavenly journey. Bob is survived by his wife of 64 years, Zelma, and his children Mike Maughon, Danny Maughon, Cyndi Stegall and Lisa Beck. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lela Francis Greene. Also surviving him are 8 grandchildren, 8 great-children and numerous other extended family members. Perhaps illustrating the unique circle of life, just hours before his passing, a just emailed sonogram of his next great-grandson was shown to the gathered family. Upon first leaving his original North Carolina home, he briefly traveled and served in the US ARMY at multiple sites including his favorite location in the Southwest – Arizona. He would next have a diversified business career in the banking field including early employment by the Bank of America in Los Angeles, CA. Later, he would move to downtown Atlanta where he would work for the then Citizens and Southern Bank (C&S), where he would meet and marry his wife, Zelma. Educationally, he attended the University of Georgia, Atlanta Division, graduating in four years. Additionally, he was a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Leadership course, and the Citizen and Southern School of Banking. After having his first two children in Atlanta, Mr. Maughon accepted a suburban opportunity to help open a NEW bank in downtown Stone Mountain, Georgia. Starting first as Cashier, Robert Maughon would soon rise through the ranks from Vice-President to eventually President through various name changes, expansions, and mergers. His Stone Mountain location choice provided him a good foundation to add two more children and raise them all in a scenic small town with tight local connections, schools, libraries, and small drug stores where the kids oft spent their allowances which their loving father gave them even during tight times. Later in his career, he changed course and went to work for the Georgia Credit Unit Affiliates which afforded him the chance to travel and spend more time with his dear wife Zelma who he attempted to “spoil” & dote on till the end of his days with hugs, love, and many shared meals.
