Jerry was born July 13th, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His mother Marie passed away when he was still very young. He was raised by his father and stepmother (Mom). He attended Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, where he wrestled. He also won the 1959 112lb. Cedar Rapids’ City Golden Glove tournament. After which he spent 4 years in the US Marine Corp, stationed in 29 Palms Ca. and Hawaii. Shortly after that, he started his career at the Rock Island railroad. He spent nearly 50 years in the transport field. He started out switching train cars on the railyard, then clerked for a short time before moving into the sales department. Jerry worked at several transport companies along the way, Mark 7, Alliance Shippers, Excell Transport, and Mode Transport, where he retired as a regional sales manager.
He loved spending time with his family. He was an avid supporter of his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes; football, wrestling, and men/women’s basketball, if they were competing, he was watching. He also lived by the motto “Once a Marine, always a Marine”. Jerry and Dianne owned homes in the North Carolina and Georgia mountains, where they could escape and relax in nature. Jerry was a hard worker, holding down 3 different jobs at once when he and first wife Sandy (Knapp) started their family. He was also known to be a very generous man, giving of his time and assets. Later in life Jerry found the Lord Jesus as both savior and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Some things never end, like friendship, love, memory and the legacy of a life that meant so much to all of us. My heart goes out to Jerry’s wife and Diane and sons, Mathew, Aaron and David. God bless you all. Jerry has been one of my dear friends since Jefferson High School. We both were on the wrestling team and spent a lot of time together during high school. We joined the Marines shortly after graduation. That was quite an experience for us, but we made it. I only saw Jerry one time when I came thru Hawaii to Okinawa. But over the years we have seen each other and emailed each other often. I will miss your emails and know we will see each in the future.
A good man, gone to soon. Rest easy my friend!
Thanks Walt and Donna, I know dad was glad to see you both after so many years.
I met Jerry years ago when he became my next door neighbor in Lithonia, As time went on it was easy to become good friends with Jerry. Our hearts go out to Diane and Jerry’s sons Matt, Aaron, and Davey.
His sons were very lucky to have such a great Dad. It was an honor watching them grow up under the direction of their father. We have so many good memories of Jerry and Diane and those memories we will hold dear. He did love those Iowa Hawkeyes, so I know the Hawkeye nation has lost a good one too. Walt and Donna Goddard
A Jefferson High School classmate here. Sad to see this. Jerry was always a fun guy. I didn’t see him a lot after High School but always enjoyed him at our reunions. My sincere condolences to the family. A good guy who will be missed.
I am so blessed that had a great and long lasting friendship with Jerry, like 70+ years! We met in elementary school and Jerry’s memory being so much better then mine he said that when he came to Harrison Elementary I was the first person to talk to him. Jerry was quite short and possible got some teasing but guess I chose to befriend him and so glad I did. Many have seen our picture dancing together at our local Rec Center in 1955 and I am only 5’2″ so you know how short he was and in later yes he got the nick name “Pee Wee”. In late November I received a phone call from Dianne and I got to talk to Jerry. Boy did we reminisce and again he remembered so much more then me, he work in my family’s grocery and that he went hunting with me and my dad, we talked about so many good times!!!! My heart is still breaking for my forever friend. My condolences to the family. R.I.P. Jerry, the world lost a good one! Love forever my dear friend!!!!
I had the pleasure of meeting Jerry over thirty years ago when he made a sales call to our office in Miami, Florida.
It is of no surprise to anyone who knew him to hear that we immediately bonded with the start of a long and beautiful friendship. Jerry had a way to make that happen without effort.
The memories we shared, including the time I met Dianne, then visited them at their home in Georgia, will hold a special place in my heart forever! They made me feel like family.
Jerry holds a very special and beautiful place in my life. I cannot think of Jerry without recalling he is responsible for some of the most fun-filled happy times of my life! Although I miss him terribly, he´s with me every step of the way.
Dianne, May God bless you and everyone in the family!
