On Saturday February 25, 2023, Major Thomas Henry Richmond, retired, was promoted to glory while at his home in Tucker, Georgia.
Major Tom was born in 1934 in Morgantown, WV, the eldest son of Harold and Wilma Richmond. In 1953, he entered the School for Officer Training in Atlanta, Ga, as a member of the Shepherds Session. After his first appointment in Charleston, WV, Major Tom married his childhood sweetheart, Dorla Arlene Rohr in 1956, and they served together in corps appointments in Norfolk, VA, Williamson, WV, Hampton, VA, Elberton, GA, Gainesville, GA, Warner Robbins, GA, Brunswick, GA, Macon, GA, Toccoa, GA, Atlanta Fulton, and Rome, GA. They retired from active service as Salvation Army Officers in 1999 after 45 years of faithful service.
Tom and Dorla had four children, Christine Carol (Peter) Horn, Major Thomas Henry II (Jennifer), John Harold (Lisa) and Elizabeth Anne (Alton) Carter. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Major Dorla Richmond in 2007 and his youngest son John Richmond in 2022.
He had 13 grandchildren, Jennifer Jones, Captain Emily Vincent, Rebecca Parsons, Major Patrick Richmond, SSGT Gregory Richmond, Petty Officer Alexander Richmond, John Thomas Richmond, Kasey Richmond, Megan Richmond, Matthew Carter, Hope Earley, Andrew Merritt-Carter and Hannah Carter. He was also blessed with 10 great-grandchildren. Apart from his years of ministry in The Salvation Army, he also served faithfully for 25 years as the State Chaplain for The Georgia Firefighters Association.
He loved his family and friends and did all he could to show them how important they were to him. He loved the Lord and was a faithful prayer warrior and soldier until the very end. When he laid down his sword, he left behind a legacy that will continue the fight from here. Well done sir. Thank you for your service.
