Nancy Barbara (Brown) Marchand passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2024 after battling a multitude of illnesses. She is preceded in death by her parents, Hugh Jonathan Brown and Margaret Elizabeth Woodliffe of Atlanta, Georgia; her sister Susan Brown Call of Carmichael, California. She is survived by her husband, Frederick James (Jim) Marchand of 32 years, and her son Bret Mathew McKee of New York City, New York; sister Irene Claire Brown of Big Canoe, Georgia; sister Rebecca Jane Kirkman of Alpharetta, Georgia; nephews Richard Carter of Fair Oaks, California; and Robert Hunter Kirkman of Buford, Georgia.

Nancy was born on September 20, 1949 in Atlanta, Georgia. She graduated from North Fulton High School in Atlanta, in 1967. She was trained in the Massey School of Business in Atlanta as a secretary. She later worked in various places in Atlanta, including a fabric store in which she met and befriended for life, Louise Fraser of Snellville, Georgia. She worked in positions at Cardiac Systems, Lanier, Stone Mountain United Methodist Church, and finally in the Arlington County (Virginia) Schools before retiring. She married in 1975 and had her son Bret in April 1977.

She and her husband Jim met in 1990 in a church Sunday school at the Briarcliff United Methodist Church in Atlanta. This was a foundation of their love for each other all of her life. She loved reading devotionals and many books. Jim and Nancy married on May 14, 1992. Every month on the 14th, she and Jim would exchange “anniversary” cards with private loving notes in each. These cards were reused for the next 32 years, every month. Nancy was the most devoted, loving wife anyone could ever ask for, always supporting Jim in every way including his times away with the military reserves and constant job travel. Her love of her son Bret was always a constant.

Nancy had a passion for all types of creativity including poetry, drawing, painting, and sewing. Her love in school was home economics, as well as being a cheerleader. She had an incredible knack for creating memory books and stories. She also loved baseball and was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves. She loved music, especially the classics from the 1960s. All who knew her loved her gentle, compassionate, kind spirit, always mindful of other people. She was truly a peacemaker and loved by all who knew her. She was always proud of and loved very much her son Bret.

She will be missed for her wonderful humor and kind spirit towards all. Nancy was a peace maker and loved harmony among people. She passed away in peace in the Northside (Gwinnett) Medical Center, surrounded by her husband, family and friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.

In lieu of flowers, her family suggests donations in her honor to the National Kidney Foundation Finance Department, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016.

  4. CandleImageBecause of our long and sweet friendship, I will keep Nancy’s memory close always and will miss her terribly. I pray God will cover Jim and Bret with his loving compassion and peace.

  5. Nancy was a dear friend for over 25 years. Nancy and I had fun dressing up on Halloween one year laughing at our silly costumes. We also enjoyed dancing to old school music. Nancy was a person who made you feel welcome. I visited her and Jim in Atlanta and what wonderful hospitality I was shown. God has a new angel on his team. I will miss her dearly.

  6. Nancy and I lived near each other in high school, and so we could walk to each other’s house, which was a treat. It was adolescent years, and we did what adolescents do. I could tell of adventures we had, but they were only exciting to us, because we were kids. I loved her friendship through which I experienced a sensitivity to others as well as a lot of fun. I lost touch with her until recently but was very happy when we reconnected. She was a lovely, kind and genuine person, and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to her husband, son, and family.

  7. Jim, Bob and I are so sorry for your loss, please know you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

  8. CandleImageWhen we remember Nancy, we think of her loving and kind soul and ability to light up the room with her laughter. Our family is keeping you and the rest of the family in our prayers.

  9. I am mourning the loss of my sister and best friend but I know she is at peace and not suffering anymore. I will always keep our wonderful memories close to my heart. I feel so fortunate to have had a sister that was also my best friend. Love you forever.

  10. CandleImageSo sorry to learn of the loss of Nancy. You both have been at the top of my list of friends throughout my life, and I know this brings a lot of pain and anguish to you. I will sincerely miss having both of you together in North Gwinnett. Nancy is one the finest ladies I have ever known. She leaves a legacy of admiration and gratitude in my heart.

  11. CandleImageNancy and I worked together to train students with disabilities to gain employment including using public transportation and helping them find jobs. She was patient and genuinely cared for the students. She was a wonderful person who thought of others. She will be missed.

  12. Jim and I worked closely for nearly 12 years albeit occasionally in different locations. During that time my late wife Marita and I came to know Nancy well, and Marita treasured Nancy’s friendship immensely because they talked frequently by phone when Jim and/or I were out of town on assignments. We enjoyed those times when Jim and Nancy could visit us in our home when they were traveling on one of their adventures. I will always be grateful for Nancy’s kind and sensitive comments to me when Marita passed after a long and difficult illness. I will miss her

  13. CandleImageI met Nancy and Jim a few years ago when I joined the corgi club. Jim, Nancy was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known and I’m so sorry for your loss.

  14. Nancy was a bright light in our lives. We shared many fun times with her, and with Jim, from our days in Virginia and beyond. She is very much missed.

  15. CandleImageNancy was an amazing friend! We worked together helping special needs children. Nancy was always so loving and compassionate with these children and made such a beautiful difference in their challenging lives. She was so kind, loving and giving.

The world lost a special person. I will miss her but take some comfort knowing her suffering is over and she is in Heaven with her God and all those she loved who went before her. Love you Nancy. Joyce Kelly
