Eugene Allen Rehm, Jr., age 81, passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2010, at the Sunrise Assisted Living facility in Decatur. Born on May 26, 1928, he spent his youth in Nampa, Idaho. He later attended Northwestern University in Chicago as a percussion major. After serving in the Army for three years as a member of the band, Gene was appointed to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 1954. He performed as a percussionist and timpanist with the orchestra for 49 seasons before his retirement in 2003. In the early years of his tenure with the orchestra, he also worked as a teacher of mathematics for the Atlanta Public School system. Gene's artistry on the cymbals lives on in the numerous recordings he made with the symphony under the baton of Robert Shaw, Yoel Levi, and Robert Spano. He was a devout vegetarian, animal lover, Libertarian, and logophile. A memorial celebration will be held on Sunday, January 17 at 5 Seasons Brewing Company in Sandy Springs on Roswell Road beginning at 3 PM
