William (Bill) Cameron
June 14, 1932 – January 9, 2014
Bill was born in Smith Center, Kansas. He retired from Hartford Insurance Company. He sang with the Decatur Civic Chorus and loved being a Girl Scout leader. Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Georgia (Sue), daughters Sherri and Christy, grandchildren – Jason, Thomas, Billy, Iris, Logan and Sophia and his sister, Carolyn Andrews. A celebration of his life will be held at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 5140 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain on Sunday, January 19th at 2 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church or the Salvation Army.
Christy, we are so sorry for your loss. May Jesus Christ comfort you and your family in this time. I know from when my dad died that his being free from pain and with Jesus really helped. We love you!
Our love to all of the Cameron Clan. Our hearts break along with yours at the passing of Uncle Bill. We will be there to help celebrate his wonderful life. We will miss him very much. I can still remember his big bear hugs and funny stories!
Bill was my dad’s (Donald Garretson) favorite nephew. Always stopped to see him when passing through Atlanta. Bill and Jim Andrews sang to Dad on his 90th birthday. He was a true gentleman. He is the one who turned me on to salmon, after preparing some of his catch in Alaska when he was coming home and stopped by to see Sue and Jim. There were originally 28 grandchildren of Rev. John and Caroline Garretson (28 cousins). Now we are down to 16. Will miss Cousin Bill’s optimism, smile, sense of humor and love of adventure.
I have so many fond memories of Bill. He was an integral part of all of our family camping trips. I remember watching him laugh with abandon. I remember his famous fish fry’s and how he would steal sugar coated biscuits fresh from the fryer.
I remember him wearing his headband even when he wasn’t noticeably hot. I always wondered about that. 🙂
Most of all I remember the unearned grins. Not often, but still enough to surprise me, he would turn to me and grin. His face would just break open as if he never knew joy until that moment.
I will always remember Bill fondly. He has left an amazing legacy of a life well lived.
Our prayers go out to our Navarre Family.

Thinking of you all as you mourn the loss of husband, father, grandfather, friend….he will be missed on earth!
Sorry to hear about Bill. Prayers go out to Sue and family.
So sorry for your loss! He was a fine Christian gentleman.
May you rest well dear cousin Bill (Gary Cameron after your terrific Pain you had to bare.
Bill called (Gary ), so much when we were younger was such a dear cousin and I loved his great since of humor and his great music voice . We are so thankful Sue and Bill were able to come to Alaska to fish with us one summer. He sang a duet with me at Church while here and he had such great faith…
Love and Prayers to Sue and all his family. May our God send much confort your way.
Love you
Bill – Gary to me – with his giving heart, great courage, determination, wonderful voice and joyful smile was, I think, one of God’s gifts to mankind. Even though we saw him so rarely, he and Sue were and always will be very dear to us.
I have wonderful/terrific memories of being a teen-ager and cousin Bill and his Dad, Uncle Bert coming to hunt pheasants with us. We all wore our farm jeans and overall’s, but they both had their hunting pants, shirts/and most important – the vests to carry the birds. That was one of the few times work stopped on the farm. Dad was always ready to go hunt with them. I have several pictures hung on the wall that are very important to me. One is of the five of us brothers on a lonely hill in Wyoming. Another is the picture of Roger laying on his horse with the mule sniffing his hat and his beer in his hand. Another is of Bill McBath, Roger, Stan and Fritz in a cave in Idaho – but a very special picture is the one of Dad, Uncle Bert, Gary/Bill, brother Bill, Stan, Fritz, Roger and me, (Brent) back behind the graineries on the Garretson Kansas, farm after a successful day of bird hunting. Also there are many fond memories of the last several years of Bill and Sue driving all the way from Georgia to Colorado to join us in our annual Garretson camping adventures. My very favorite memory of Gary is when he sang “Holy Ground”, at Mother’s birthday celebration in Franklin Nebraska. I was surprised by how terrific he could sing. He will certainly be missed. Brent
“Every man’s life ends the same way. It is only in the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another.” Ernest Hemingway I think by reading the posts of past and those to come we can all agree that Bill Cameron was a very loved man. They say it is not who you loved but who loved you. Mr. Cameron was such a well loved man, leaving a legacy of wonderful memories that anyone who knew him will treasure. My fond memories of “Mr. C” go back to my Girl Scouting days, camping, hiking the Appalachian Trail, canoeing and sail plaining, as well as singing songs, and fish frys. Mr. C. helped to develop a lot of young peoples lives through teaching them the love of the outdoors. I will always be greatful to him and to Mrs. C for all that they did for me as a teen. Sending love and prayers to you Mrs. C, and the rest of the Cameron Clan!
love,
Sharon (Dye) Kiley
So many wonderful memories of Mr C and the whole Cameron family…sending lots of love and prayers your way.
God bless,

It is with a saddened heart that I reflect on the profound impact on my life of Bill Cameron, Mr. C to those of us who were girl scouts. Mr. C believed in us, a bunch of teenage girls. That we were capable of outdoor adventure and activities at a time before Title 9. Mr. C led no ordinary scout troop. He accompanied us through thick and thin, high and low in pursuit of backpacking, sailing, whitewater canoeing, spelunking, camping. He was our hero and still is. The lessons we learned have lasted a lifetime. In fact, I realized that I would never have connected with my husband had it not been for the love of outdoor adventure gained from Mr. And Mrs. C’s scout troop. I send my love to Mrs. C, Sherri and Christy.

We called him Garry he was a great guy we had a lot great trips with bill and sue. He will be missed. A day does not go by without remembering a lot of our fun together.
I called him Bill. Ralph and I enjoyed so many camping experiences with
Bill and Sue. Bill always seemed be so happy no matter even if it was pouring down rain which isn’t great for camping.
Getting acquainted with my cousin Bill and his dear Sue is one of my best memories. I send love and prayers to Sue and all the family.

Sue, you have my deepest sympathy and prayers. I have fond memories of your visit to us when we lived in Sparks, NV. Garry played the piano and the organ and Bill just thoroughly enjoyed it, as did Garry and I. I have played the video so many times but never tire of watching it. It was a joy to hear those two trade stories. I know this is a painful time for you, it’s also a time when the family will be a great strength to you as well as your faith. Blessings, Re
Although Virginia ( nee Garretson) has many fond memories of visits on “The Farm.” I, Bill, did not meet “Gary” till the early/mid 70’s. He was assigned to an office in California (we do not recall where) and we were stationed in San Diego. We fished the kelp beds off the coast of San Diego; We attend many drag race events (including Winter Nationals); and held his bar-b-que down during an earth quake. We enjoyed each other and had great times. He later visited us in Idaho for a few days where he bar-b-cued fish he had brought – (can you imagine bring fish to Idaho???)
We had great times together, he was a gentleman and we formed a solid bond.
Carol Beth, Sue, we know these are very hard times for you. We know that Bill (always Gary to us) is in a better place, is pain free- at last, and enfolded in Gods arms. We pray that, through Jesus, God will lay his hands on you and ease your pain and suffering. These things we ask in Jesus’s name -Amen.
May the lord be with you, guide, and keep you,
Bill and Virginia
